How a brand found out it was nine months behind its own category
The brand's category team reviewed assortment every six months using retailer sales reports, which by definition only contain products they already sell. Actowiz swept the full category tree across five retailers daily for eight weeks and found 404 competitor SKUs with no equivalent in their range — but more usefully, showed that 62% of those gaps were variant-level rather than new products: missing travel sizes, missing refill formats, missing shades. Those are far cheaper to close than a new product. They also found 41 competitor launches that had already been delisted inside 90 days, which removed a whole tranche of ideas from the roadmap. Closing the top 60 gaps by revenue added 11% to category revenue in two quarters.
The most detailed study of range breadth and launch velocity available — covering 38 categories across Amazon, Walmart, Target, Instacart and Flipkart. Built from 8 months of Actowiz daily category sweeps.
Everything category teams ask before going live with Actowiz
Retailer reports only contain products you already list. They cannot show a SKU you have never sold, which is exactly what an assortment gap is. We sweep the full category tree daily, so a competitor variant you have no equivalent for appears in your dashboard the week it launches rather than at the next range review.
You set the boundary in week one — categories, price bands, formats and any deliberate exclusions. Everything inside that boundary that a tracked competitor lists and you do not is a gap, ranked by estimated revenue rather than by count. Most clients find the ranked top 50 is a very different list from the full 400.
A missing variant rather than a missing product. You may sell the 200ml but not the 50ml travel size, the standard shade but not the four extensions, the single but not the twin pack. These are usually two-thirds of the total gap and are far cheaper to close than a new product, which is why we report them separately.
Within 24 hours of the listing going live, and often sooner. We also track pre-launch signals — GTIN registrations, image assets appearing on CDNs, placeholder listings and packaging filings — which typically give another one to three weeks of warning on larger launches.
Yes, and clients often find this the more valuable half. We track every launch to delisting, so you can see which ideas were tried and abandoned, how long they lasted and at what price. It removes a surprising number of items from a roadmap before anyone spends on tooling.
Both. You get the live dashboard, a REST API for your PIM or planning system, daily CSV or Parquet exports to S3 or GCS, and Slack or email alerts when a tracked competitor launches, delists or copies one of your SKUs. Attribute-level matching is included in every export.
