What is grocery price tracking with unit-price normalization?

Grocery price tracking is the daily, SKU-level monitoring of shelf prices, promotions, pack sizes and stock availability across major U.S. retailers — Walmart, Target, Kroger, Costco, Albertsons and Amazon Fresh. Actowiz Solutions tracks 28,464+ grocery SKUs daily and normalizes every price to a per-unit figure ($/oz, $/lb, $/count), which makes two things possible: fair cross-retailer comparison regardless of pack size, and automatic shrinkflation detection — flagging products whose packs quietly shrink while the shelf price stays the same, a hidden unit-price increase averaging +7.8% in flagged items. CPG brands use the data to benchmark pricing against competitors and private labels, retailers use it for competitive price positioning, and research and media teams use it to measure real grocery inflation by category and metro — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston — ahead of official indices.

Questions CPG & retail teams ask first
Coverage, methodology and delivery
Which U.S. grocery retailers does Actowiz track?
Walmart, Target, Kroger and Instacart in parallel, with extended coverage of Costco, Albertsons, H-E-B, Publix and Amazon Fresh. Every SKU is tracked across retailers simultaneously with daily refresh; critical SKUs can be refreshed every 4 hours.
How does shrinkflation detection work?
Every SKU is normalized to unit price ($/oz, $/lb, $/count) daily. When a pack size shrinks while the shelf price holds or rises — say 19.3 oz quietly becoming 18.1 oz at the same $4.98 — the system flags it automatically with the effective unit-price increase. 147 products were flagged in the last 30 days.
What is unit-price normalization and why does it matter?
It converts every shelf price into a comparable per-unit figure, so a 52 oz carton at one retailer compares fairly with a 59 oz carton at another. Without it, cross-retailer price comparison in grocery is systematically wrong.
Which markets are covered — national or city-level?
Both: a national average view plus market views for New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, with additional metros added on request. Zip-code / store-level tracking is available on enterprise plans.
How do I get the data — dashboard, API or feed?
All three: this live dashboard, a REST API, and daily CSV/Parquet feeds to S3 or GCS — plus Slack/email alerts within 30 minutes of a price change. A free 500-row sample for your categories is shared within 2 hours.
Which U.S. grocery platforms are most in demand for price data?
Based on Actowiz client requests in 2026: Walmart.com leads (22.4% of data demand), followed by Amazon Fresh + Whole Foods (18.6%), Instacart (14.2% — the fastest-growing, driven by aggregator markup and fee tracking), Kroger (11.8%) and Target (8.9%). Costco, Albertsons/Safeway, H-E-B, Aldi and Publix round out the top 10; any other platform can be added within days.
How much does it cost?
Flexible plans start from $500/month depending on retailers, SKU count, refresh frequency and market coverage. Custom dashboards for your exact SKU list go live in 7 working days, with a free pilot available.
