If you sell a branded product on Amazon, the seller who owns the Buy Box decides what most shoppers pay, how fast they receive it and whose service they experience. Very often, that seller is not you or your authorised partner.
What is Buy Box tracking? Buy Box tracking is the scheduled capture of who holds the Featured Offer on each of your product pages, at what landed price, with which fulfilment method, and whether the box is suppressed. Brands use it to spot unauthorised sellers, MAP breaks and lost sales early, across every Amazon and Walmart marketplace they sell on.
This guide walks channel and e-commerce managers through the whole process: what the Buy Box is, the data fields worth capturing, how marketplaces in the US, UK, Germany, UAE and India differ, how often to refresh, how to set up alerts, and when to build in-house versus buy a managed feed.
Amazon now calls the Buy Box the Featured Offer. According to Amazon's own seller guidance, it is the offer shown in the area near the top of the product detail page with the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons. Other offers move to the 'Other sellers on Amazon' panel.
Amazon says it features the most competitive offers. The factors it lists include total price including shipping, delivery speed and certainty, fulfilment quality and customer experience. An out-of-stock offer cannot be featured. The Seller Central help page Becoming the Featured Offer is the official reference for sellers.
Amazon also notes that when no offer is eligible, the page shows a 'See options' button instead of Add to Cart. That happens when items are out of stock, priced too high, or priced so low that Amazon suspects a pricing error. For brands, this suppressed state is just as important to track as who wins.
Walmart runs a similar model. Its Marketplace Learn guide on the buy box explains how one offer is featured on the product page while others appear as alternative sellers.
Sellers track the Buy Box to win it. Brands use Buy Box tracking to protect pricing, channel rules and customer experience. The main reasons are:
Good Buy Box tracking captures more than a price. The table below shows the fields we recommend in a brand-focused feed. Field names are snake_case so they drop straight into a warehouse or BI tool.
| Field | What it captures | Why brands need it |
|---|---|---|
| asin / item_id | Amazon ASIN or Walmart item ID, mapped to your SKU | Joins public data to your catalogue and MAP list |
| marketplace | amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, amazon.ae, amazon.in, walmart.com | Separates country rules, currency and tax |
| captured_at | UTC timestamp of the capture | Proves when a violation was visible |
| buy_box_seller_name / buy_box_seller_id | Seller holding the Featured Offer | Flags unauthorised or new sellers |
| buy_box_price | Item price in the box | MAP and price-policy checks |
| shipping_price | Delivery charge shown for the box offer | Landed price = item + shipping |
| landed_price | Calculated total price to the shopper | Fair comparison across sellers |
| fulfilment_type | FBA, merchant-fulfilled, or sold by Amazon / Walmart | 1P vs 3P analysis, service risk |
| offer_count | Number of new (and optionally used) offers | Spots seller pile-ons and price wars |
| buy_box_state | won / suppressed ('See options') / out_of_stock | Tracks suppression and lost-sales windows |
| delivery_promise + location | Delivery date shown for a set ZIP, postcode, emirate or pincode | Delivery speed changes who wins |
| screenshot_url | Time-stamped page capture | Evidence for MAP and seller outreach |
Optional fields include seller rating and rating count, lowest offer price, Prime or fast-delivery badges, coupon presence and your MAP value (supplied by you) with a calculated map_gap.
Buy Box tracking across countries is not one script run six times. Prices, tax display, delivery locations and seller ecosystems all differ. Here is how the main marketplaces compare for brand teams.
| Marketplace | Currency / price display | Location context | What brands watch most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon.com (US) | USD, tax added at checkout | ZIP code | Unauthorised 3P sellers, MAP, Amazon 1P vs 3P |
| Amazon.co.uk (UK) | GBP, VAT-inclusive | Postcode | Grey imports from EU, price policy on Prime offers |
| Amazon.de (Germany) | EUR, VAT-inclusive, unit prices on many items | Postcode | Cross-border EU resellers, price consistency with other EU stores |
| Amazon.ae (UAE) | AED, VAT-inclusive; English and Arabic pages | Emirate / area | Parallel imports, Amazon vs 3P share during sale events |
| Amazon.in (India) | INR with MRP shown; bank offers shown separately | Pincode | Seller sprawl, MRP vs selling price, festive-sale undercutting |
| Walmart.com (US) | USD; featured offer plus 'more seller options' | ZIP code | 3P marketplace sellers, MAP, Walmart 1P vs 3P |
This guide focuses on the Buy Box signal itself. For the policy side of minimum advertised price on Amazon, Walmart and other marketplaces, see our MAP compliance guide.
The Buy Box can rotate between sellers within a day, especially when several offers are close on price. The right refresh frequency for Buy Box tracking should follow the business decision, not the maximum technically possible.
| Use case | Suggested refresh | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Daily MAP compliance report | 1–4 times per day | Enough for most policy enforcement |
| Unauthorised seller detection | Daily | New seller IDs rarely need minute-level checks |
| Hero ASINs during Prime Day, Black Friday, Diwali or White Friday | Hourly or faster | Short windows; price changes stack quickly |
| Suppression monitoring for top sellers | Every few hours | Catch 'See options' states before a weekend |
| Long-tail catalogue | Weekly | Keeps cost proportional to revenue |
Actowiz can schedule different cadences per ASIN group in one feed.
Most Buy Box tracking projects fail at the alert stage, not the data stage. Too many alerts and the team stops reading them. A practical workflow looks like this:
A typical inquiry we see asks for near-real-time Amazon price and seller monitoring on a few hundred ASINs, with alerts and screenshots.
Buy Box tracking should use publicly visible product page data only: the seller name shown, price, shipping, delivery promise and offer count that any shopper can see without logging in.
Our web scraping compliance guide explains how we approach public data collection.
A simple script can read a single Amazon page. Running reliable Buy Box tracking across six marketplaces, thousands of ASINs and set delivery locations is a different job.
| Factor | Build in-house | Managed feed (buy) |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Engineers, proxies, location handling per country | Provider sets up marketplaces and locations |
| Maintenance | Page layouts and anti-bot measures change often | Provider fixes breaks |
| Data quality | You build QA, deduplication, SKU matching | Normalised fields, QA checks, SKU mapping |
| Alerts and evidence | Build rules, routing and screenshots yourself | Rules, screenshots and delivery included |
| Cost profile | Fixed engineering time plus infrastructure | Usage-based; scales with ASINs and cadence |
| Best for | Small, stable lists on one marketplace | Multi-country catalogues and MAP programmes |
When you compare providers, ask about country and location coverage, refresh cadence, how suppressed and out-of-stock states are recorded, delivery format (API, CSV, cloud bucket, dashboard), QA steps, and usage rights. Our Amazon product data scraping service and Buy Box monitoring page cover the delivery options.
They are the same thing. Amazon renamed the Buy Box to the Featured Offer, but sellers, brands and tools still use 'Buy Box'.
Yes. Buy Box tracking for brands uses public product pages: the featured seller, price, shipping, delivery promise and offer count that any shopper sees.
Amazon shows 'See options' when no offer is eligible – for example, out of stock, priced too high, or priced so low it looks like an error. Tracking the suppressed state shows how often this happens.
It can rotate several times a day when offers are close on landed price and delivery. For Buy Box tracking, hero ASINs during sale events need hourly checks; most catalogues are fine with daily.
Yes. The Buy Box price is the price most shoppers see, so a time-stamped capture with seller and screenshot is strong evidence for MAP outreach.
Yes. Walmart features one offer on the product page and lists other sellers separately, so the same Buy Box tracking fields and alerts apply to Walmart.com.
