Sobeys Data Scraping

Conventional, discount and Quebec banners under one company — and in Quebec the product name exists in two languages.

Sobeys data scraping collects pricing, promotions and availability across this Canadian group's banners. Two structural features: the group runs conventional, discount and regional banners that price apart, and its Quebec banner lists in French — so product names exist in two languages and neither is the canonical one.

Canada's bilingual requirement is the detail most datasets get wrong here, and it is not fixable after collection.

Free pilot on your own Sobeys list, returned in 24 hours. No card, no trial clock — and you keep the sample data either way.

Platform specifics

Banners, provinces and two languages

These are the reasons a Sobeys dataset needs its own handling rather than a shared retail schema.

Conventional and discount are different retailers

The group operates conventional full-service banners alongside a discount banner and regional fascias. Those are different formats with different competitive sets.

  • The discount banner competes against other discounters, not against the conventional banners.
  • Range differs substantially between them.
  • Promotional mechanics differ by banner.
  • A group average moves with banner mix rather than with pricing.

banner and banner_format are on every record, with group figures as computed rollups carrying store_count_observed — the same discipline as our Loblaw page, which is this group's main competitor.

Province is a dimension too

Canadian grocery pricing varies by province, driven by distribution, regulation and regional competition. province travels with every record and a national figure is a rollup rather than a price.

Bilingual listings, and why one name is not enough

The group's Quebec banner lists products in French. Elsewhere listings are in English. Some products carry both.

The temptation is to pick one and normalise. That is a destructive operation and it cannot be undone.

  • Neither name is canonical. Both are what the retailer published, in their own market.
  • Choosing one loses the other, and the lost one cannot be recovered.
  • Matching against a French listing using an English name fails, and fails silently.
  • Translating either into the other is worse — the argument our multilingual page makes in full.

We retain name_en and name_fr as separate fields, populated where each is published, with language_published recording which the listing used. Matching runs on identifiers, pack structure and price position, not on names.

And the same applies to everything else on the listing

Category paths, promotional text and attribute values are all published in the listing language. Each is retained as published rather than normalised into one language.

Provincial deposits, flyers and what we do not collect

Deposits vary by province

Container deposit schemes differ across Canadian provinces — different amounts, different container scopes, and some provinces without a scheme at all.

deposit_amount, deposit_type and deposit_scheme_province are recorded separately and never folded into the price. A cross-province comparison that ignores this is systematically wrong in the provinces that operate schemes.

Flyer cycles

Weekly flyers drive most promotional movement, on a published cycle. flyer_cycle_week travels with every record so sampling position is known — the timing argument our cadence page makes.

What we do not collect

  • Loyalty or points account data. Points are not a cash price and no accounts are created.
  • Sales, volumes or store performance. Not published.
  • Customer or employee data. Never.
Scope

What we collect on Sobeys, and what we do not

The right column matters more than the left. Anyone can list fields; the limits are what tell you whether the dataset will hold up.

✅ What we collect

  • banner and banner_format on every record
  • province as a dimension, with national figures as rollups
  • name_en and name_fr as separate fields, neither treated as canonical
  • language_published recording which the listing used
  • Matching on identifiers and structure, never on names
  • Deposit amount, type and provincial scheme recorded separately
  • flyer_cycle_week on every record
  • Category paths and promotional text retained in the published language
  • store_count_observed stated on any rollup

❌ What we do not, and why

  • A group average across conventional and discount banners
  • One language chosen and the other discarded
  • A name translated into the other official language
  • Deposit folded into the price
  • Points treated as a cash discount, or loyalty account data

Core Sobeys fields

The full dictionary is agreed during scoping. These are the fields specific to this platform.

Field What it is on this platform
group / banner / banner_format / store_id Banner and format are dimensions
province Canadian pricing varies by province
product_id / upc Identifiers where published
name_en / name_fr / language_published Both retained. Neither canonical
price / currency Store-level where exposed
deposit_amount / deposit_type / deposit_scheme_province Separate. Varies by province
flyer_cycle_week So sampling position is known
pack_size / price_per_unit / unit_basis Computed by us
is_own_label / own_label_tier From range naming
matched_on / matched_on_name Identifiers and structure, not names
store_count_observed Stated on any rollup
Use cases

What teams do with Sobeys data

Banner-level Canadian benchmarking

Banner and format on every record, so the discount banner is compared against other discounters rather than averaged with conventional banners.

Bilingual catalogue analysis

Both language fields retained, so a Quebec listing is matched and analysed without discarding the name the retailer actually published.

Provincial price variation

Province as a dimension with deposits recorded by provincial scheme, which is the only way a cross-province comparison holds.

Flyer cycle promotional tracking

Cycle week on every record with collection aligned, so promotional intensity measures the market rather than the sampling schedule.

How we engage

Three ways to engage us

Same collection pipeline and QA underneath. The difference is who holds the schedule and how the data reaches you.

Managed service (most common)

We own the collection, the QA and the delivery. You receive clean data on a schedule and never touch a scraper.

  • Dedicated engineer assigned to your account
  • Site changes fixed by us, not reported to you
  • Scheduled delivery to your warehouse or S3
  • Named contact on Slack or email

Best fit: Teams who need the data, not the infrastructure.

API access

The same collection pipeline exposed as an authenticated REST endpoint your systems query directly.

  • On-demand and scheduled endpoints
  • Rate limits agreed to your load profile
  • Sandbox keys for integration testing
  • Versioned schema with deprecation notice

Best fit: Product and engineering teams building on live data.

One-time or project extraction

A defined pull for a specific question — market sizing, diligence, a pitch, a one-off audit.

  • Fixed scope agreed in writing upfront
  • Single delivery with full QA report
  • Methodology documented for your records
  • Converts to managed if you want continuity

Best fit: Research, strategy and diligence work with a deadline.

Pricing

Every engagement is quoted individually, because the honest answer depends on your scope: how many sources, how many records, how often, and how the data reaches you. We scope it with you, run a free pilot on your own sources, and then quote a fixed monthly figure — no per-request metering and no overage billing when volumes move. Request a quote and you will have a number after one call.

Sobeys is usually collected alongside its competitors

Almost nobody buys a single platform in isolation. Sobeys data becomes useful when it sits next to the competitor set on one schema, refreshed on one schedule, so a price index or availability comparison is genuinely like-for-like.

That is what grocery data scraping covers, and a Sobeys-only engagement can be expanded into it without rebuilding. If you already know you need several platforms, start there instead — it is the same pipeline and usually the better scoping conversation.

FAQ

Sobeys data scraping: frequently asked questions

Platform-specific questions, including what cannot be collected here.

Because neither is canonical — both are what the retailer published, in their own market. Choosing one loses the other, and the lost one cannot be recovered.

Matching against a French listing using an English name fails, and fails silently. We retain both as separate fields and match on identifiers and structure instead.

As an additional field if you want it, never as a replacement. Translating into a name field destroys the string the retailer published and the error is undetectable to anyone who does not read the source language.

Because it competes against other discounters rather than against the group's conventional banners, with substantially different range and promotional mechanics.

A group average across them moves with banner mix rather than with pricing.

Enough to matter. Schemes differ by province in amount and container scope, and some provinces have none.

We record the amount, type and provincial scheme separately and never fold them in. A cross-province comparison that ignores this is systematically wrong in the provinces that operate schemes.

No. Points are not a cash price — their value depends on a redemption choice we do not observe.

We capture point earn where displayed, in its own field, and never convert it. No accounts are created in any market.

We quote individually on banners, provinces, store count and refresh. Banner count matters most, since each is effectively a separate retailer.

One scoping call, a free pilot within 24 hours, then a fixed monthly quote. Request a quote.
