Client Overview

The client operates in the health and wellness e-commerce space and was building a Magento storefront that required the full practitioner-grade product catalog from Emerson Ecologics — one of the established distributors of professional supplements and wellness products in the United States.

They needed six specific fields per product — photo, title, manufacturer, vendor item code, retail price, and description — for an estimated 16,000 to 19,000 products, structured into a single Excel spreadsheet that could be imported cleanly into Magento without manual reformatting.

The Challenge

Catalog scale. With 16K–19K products across a large roster of manufacturers, full coverage demanded a systematic traversal strategy rather than ad hoc collection.
Shop-By-Company navigation. The catalog is organised by company/manufacturer (ShopByCompany), so extraction had to walk the full company index, then each company's product listings, then every product detail page.
Image capture. Each product's photo URL had to be captured reliably for Magento's image import, handling products with missing or placeholder images consistently.
Field precision. Retail price, vendor item code, and manufacturer had to be captured exactly — correctly typed and free of stray markup — so the Magento import would not fail or mis-map.
Magento-ready schema. Output columns had to align to Magento's product-import expectations (SKU, name, price, description, image, manufacturer attribute) so the file imports directly.
Description cleanliness. Product descriptions had to be captured as clean text/allowed markup — no broken HTML, entities, or formatting artefacts that would corrupt the storefront.

The Solution by Actowiz Solutions

Actowiz built a structured, three-stage extraction pipeline tailored to the Shop-By-Company catalog architecture, feeding a Magento-ready Excel exporter.

Extraction Architecture

Stage 1 — Company index traversal. The pipeline walks the full ShopByCompany index to enumerate every manufacturer/company in the catalog.
Stage 2 — Product listing crawl. For each company, all product listing pages are paginated and collected, building the complete product URL set across the catalog.
Stage 3 — Product detail extraction. Each product page yields the six target fields — photo, title, manufacturer, vendor item code, retail price, and description — captured and cleaned per product.

Data Handling

Image URL capture. Primary product photo URL captured for Magento image import; missing images handled consistently (blank, not broken).
Cleaning & precision layer. Price normalised to a numeric format; item code and manufacturer trimmed; descriptions stripped of junk markup and encoded as UTF-8.
Deduplication. Duplicate products (e.g., listed under multiple paths) removed by vendor item code / product identity.
Magento-ready Excel exporter. Records written to a single .xlsx with Magento-aligned columns, standardised headers, and consistent formatting for direct import.
