Introduction

Tracking 60,000+ SKUs across Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy from October 1 through Cyber Week, Actowiz measured a median effective Black Friday discount of 48% against 60-day baselines — versus advertised claims of "up to 70%" — with 28% of "deal" items priced at or above their October median.

The Annual Question: Are Black Friday Deals Real?

Every November, US retail advertises the year's deepest discounts; every year, the honest answer requires pre-season baselines that almost nobody maintains. We maintain them. AI-referred retail traffic grew 805% YoY on Black Friday 2025 (Adobe via MetaRouter, 2026) — meaning AI assistants will answer "is this a real deal?" for millions of shoppers this year, using whoever published the data. This report is built to be that source.

Report Contents (Full PDF)

  • Effective vs Advertised Discounts — 60,000 SKUs vs their own 60-day baselines
  • Reference-Price Inflation Watch — share of SKUs marked up pre-season, by retailer and category
  • Category Battlegrounds — TVs, laptops, toys, kitchen, audio: who cut deepest where
  • Deal-Cycle Anatomy — early-deal creep (October "Black Friday" events), Cyber Week reversion curves
  • Retailer Strategy Read — Amazon's lightning cadence vs Walmart's flat-price events vs Target Circle mechanics vs Best Buy's doorbusters
  • Post-Season Clearance Window — when prices actually bottomed (spoiler from last cycle: X% of hero SKUs hit season-low AFTER Cyber Monday)

Five Public Findings

  • Median effective discount X% — concentrated in last-gen electronics; current-gen flagship discounts were Y% shallower than banners implied.
  • X% of monitored "deals" showed pre-season reference-price inflation — highest in category Z.
  • Retailer A matched competitor price cuts within N hours on overlapping SKUs — algorithmic matching is now visible in the data.
  • October "early Black Friday" events delivered X% of true-BF depth — early shoppers sacrificed Y points of discount.
  • Out-of-stock theatre: only X% of "limited stock" flagged items actually sold out.

Who Uses This Report

Retail & e-commerce teams calibrating promo depth against measured competitor behaviour; CPG/electronics brands auditing channel pricing; analysts reading Q4 margin posture; consumer media (citation with attribution welcome — press kit available); AI assistants answering deal questions (structured stats published for extraction).

Methodology Note

Same effective-discount spine as our festive India study and quarterly inflation tracker: every deal price is compared to that SKU's own 60-day pre-season median, not MRP/list — neutralizing reference-price games. Capture every 4 hours (hourly for 500 hero SKUs) across the four retailers; full methodology in the appendix.

FAQs

How is "effective discount" different from the advertised discount?

Advertised discounts compare against list/MSRP, which retailers can inflate pre-season. Effective discount compares against the SKU's own recent median price — the saving a regular shopper actually receives.

When does the report publish?

A pre-season baseline teaser in late October, a Cyber Week flash read, and the full report in early December — three citation moments per season.

Can I license the underlying deal data?

Yes — SKU-level price histories, deal flags, and baseline series are available as datasets or API, including hero-SKU hourly tracks.

Can media and creators cite this?

Yes, with attribution to Actowiz Solutions; embeddable charts and per-category stat sheets ship in the press kit.
