Motor Insurance Data

A car insurance premium is priced for one driver and one car. What can be collected honestly is everything around it.

Motor insurance data covers what is published about car and van insurance: cover levels, excesses, courtesy car and windscreen terms from insurers' own documents, and published average premiums. Those averages come in two kinds — the ABI's tracker of premiums actually paid, and the Confused.com/WTW index of quotes — and they are never mixed. No quote is ever requested with invented personal details; individual premiums are not collected.

Most motor price data on the market is made of quotes for people who do not exist. This page describes the data that does not need them.

Free pilot on your own Motor insurance list, returned in 24 hours. No card, no trial clock — and you keep the sample data either way.

Platform specifics

Paid and quoted are different numbers

These are the reasons a Motor insurance dataset needs its own handling rather than a shared retail schema.

Two published averages

The ABI publishes an average of motor premiums actually paid, from its members' policies. The Confused.com and WTW index is built from quotes shown to people shopping. Both are useful, and they answer different questions.

  • index_name, publisher and index_basis — paid or quoted — on every figure.
  • period and published_at recorded; revisions are new versions, not overwrites.
  • No blended "market price" is built from the two.
  • Segment breakdowns are recorded only as each publisher gives them.

In the US, rate filings made to state regulators are often public, and are recorded as filings with their state and date.

Cover terms, renewal rules and what we do not do

What the documents say

Cover level, compulsory and voluntary excess, courtesy car, windscreen, driving other cars, EU cover and key exclusions come from each product's IPID and policy wording, with page references.

The UK renewal rule

Since January 2022, UK home and motor renewal prices may not exceed the equivalent new-business price. The FCA's 2025 evaluation reported savings. This is context, recorded as regulation; we do not test any firm's compliance.

What we do not do

Submit quotes with invented drivers or vehicles, blend paid and quoted averages, or collect any policyholder's data.

Scope

What we collect on Motor insurance, and what we do not

The right column matters more than the left. Anyone can list fields; the limits are what tell you whether the dataset will hold up.

✅ What we collect

  • Cover terms from IPIDs and wordings, with page references
  • Compulsory and voluntary excess as stated
  • Courtesy car, windscreen and exclusions as stated
  • Published averages with index_basis: paid or quoted
  • Publisher, period and published_at on every figure
  • Revisions kept as versions
  • US state rate filings where public
  • Document versions tracked over time
  • No invented quote requests, ever

❌ What we do not, and why

  • Quotes requested with invented drivers or vehicles
  • Paid and quoted averages blended
  • A single "market price" invented
  • Compliance judgements about renewal pricing
  • Policyholder or claimant data

How we engage

Three ways to engage us

Same collection pipeline and QA underneath. The difference is who holds the schedule and how the data reaches you.

Managed service (most common)

We own the collection, the QA and the delivery. You receive clean data on a schedule and never touch a scraper.

  • Dedicated engineer assigned to your account
  • Site changes fixed by us, not reported to you
  • Scheduled delivery to your warehouse or S3
  • Named contact on Slack or email

Best fit: Teams who need the data, not the infrastructure.

API access

The same collection pipeline exposed as an authenticated REST endpoint your systems query directly.

  • On-demand and scheduled endpoints
  • Rate limits agreed to your load profile
  • Sandbox keys for integration testing
  • Versioned schema with deprecation notice

Best fit: Product and engineering teams building on live data.

One-time or project extraction

A defined pull for a specific question — market sizing, diligence, a pitch, a one-off audit.

  • Fixed scope agreed in writing upfront
  • Single delivery with full QA report
  • Methodology documented for your records
  • Converts to managed if you want continuity

Best fit: Research, strategy and diligence work with a deadline.

Pricing

Every engagement is quoted individually, because the honest answer depends on your scope: how many sources, how many records, how often, and how the data reaches you. We scope it with you, run a free pilot on your own sources, and then quote a fixed monthly figure — no per-request metering and no overage billing when volumes move. Request a quote and you will have a number after one call.

Motor insurance is usually collected alongside its competitors

Almost nobody buys a single platform in isolation. Motor insurance data becomes useful when it sits next to the competitor set on one schema, refreshed on one schedule, so a price index or availability comparison is genuinely like-for-like.

That is what insurance data covers, and a Motor insurance-only engagement can be expanded into it without rebuilding. If you already know you need several platforms, start there instead — it is the same pipeline and usually the better scoping conversation.

FAQ

Motor insurance data scraping: frequently asked questions

Platform-specific questions, including what cannot be collected here.

No. Quotes require personal details, and we never invent people to obtain them.

Published averages: the ABI's premiums-paid tracker and the Confused.com/WTW quoted-price index, each labelled.

Because one measures what people paid and the other what they were quoted. Blending them measures neither.

Each product's IPID and policy wording, with page references.

Public state rate filings and insurers' published documents.

It depends on insurers, documents and refresh.
