Review data scraping is the automated collection of public review text, star ratings and review dates from retailer, marketplace and review sites, structured into one dataset. For brand monitoring, it lets teams compare how a product or store is rated on Amazon, Walmart, Boots, Google and Trustpilot, spot new complaints early and track the effect of fixes.
One retailer's reviews rarely tell the full story. A shampoo can score well on its own brand site, drift lower on a marketplace and attract delivery complaints on Trustpilot. Brand and CX teams need all of these views in one place, with the same fields and the same definitions.
This guide to review data scraping is based on review-data work we delivered in 2026 across UK health and beauty and an EU marketplace. It covers the fields to collect, how sources differ, how to clean and analyse the data, the rules on fake reviews, and how to decide between building and buying. Throughout, the scope is public review content only: reviewer names and profiles are excluded or pseudonymised.
Review data scraping across several sources gives brand teams four things a single retailer dashboard cannot:
Every source measures something slightly different. Before you merge review data scraping output from them, record what each rating refers to and which trust labels it shows.
| Source | What is rated | Rating scale | Volume signals | Trust / verification labels | Syndication |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Product (ASIN) | 1–5 stars | Total ratings count, ratings with written reviews, star histogram | 'Verified Purchase' badge on eligible reviews | Reviews are native to Amazon |
| Walmart | Product (item ID) | 1–5 stars | Ratings count, review count, star breakdown | Verified-purchaser and incentivised labels where shown | May display reviews syndicated from brand or partner sites, with attribution |
| Boots (UK) | Product | 1–5 stars | Review count per product, star breakdown | Incentivised or sampled-review labels where shown | Can include syndicated reviews – check attribution text |
| Google reviews | Business location (Business Profile) | 1–5 stars | Total reviews per location, recency | No purchase verification; owner replies shown | Not syndicated |
| Trustpilot | Company or domain | 1–5 stars (TrustScore summary) | Total reviews, star distribution | 'Verified' label for invited or confirmed reviews | Not syndicated |
Based on labels visible on public pages at the time of writing – confirm labels per source during the pilot, as sites change layouts.
Syndication needs special care. Bazaarvoice's network rules require syndicated content to be attributed to the sender, and products are matched on identifiers such as UPC, EAN or ISBN. PowerReviews runs its own syndication programme, the Open Network. The same review can therefore appear on a brand site and several retailers, which inflates counts if you do not deduplicate.
Keep the review data scraping schema tight. Each field should support analysis, and no field should identify the person who wrote the review.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| source | Site name, for example amazon_us, walmart_us, boots_uk, google, trustpilot |
| product_id / location_id | Retailer item ID, ASIN, GTIN or Google place identifier for the entity reviewed |
| brand / product_name | Brand and product title as shown on the page |
| rating | Star value, normalised to a 1–5 scale |
| review_title / review_text | Public title and body text of the review |
| review_date | Date posted, stored in ISO format |
| verified_flag / incentivised_flag | Trust labels exactly as displayed on the page |
| syndication_source | Original site named in the attribution, if the review is syndicated |
| helpful_votes / owner_response | Helpfulness count and whether the brand or store replied |
| reviewer_ref | Pseudonymised hash used only for deduplication – no names, profile links or photos |
Raw review data scraping output is noisy. These steps make it fit for analysis.
Star ratings show how people feel; review text explains why. Sentiment analysis scores each review as positive, neutral or negative. Aspect-based analysis goes further and tags the topic, such as scent, texture, packaging, price, delivery or customer service.
For brand monitoring, aspects matter more than the overall score. A product can hold a 4.3 average while packaging complaints climb on one retailer. With weekly review data scraping, track aspect share and sentiment by source, and alert when a negative aspect rises above its usual range.
Regulators now treat fake reviews as a legal risk, which makes clean review data more valuable to brands and retailers.
| Region | Rule | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| US | FTC Trade Regulation Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials (announced 14 August 2024) | Bans buying, selling or creating fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, sentiment-conditioned incentives and review suppression; allows civil penalties against knowing violators |
| UK | Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, Schedule 20, paragraph 13 | Bans submitting or commissioning fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews, and publishing reviews in a misleading way without reasonable steps to prevent fakes. The CMA can fine up to 10% of global turnover |
| EU | Directive (EU) 2019/2161 amending the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive | Traders giving access to reviews must say whether and how they check reviews come from real buyers; submitting false reviews is blacklisted |
For review data scraping itself, apply data minimisation. Collect public review text, rating and date; exclude or pseudonymise reviewer names, profiles and photos; never log in or bypass access controls; and respect each site's terms and rate limits. Under GDPR and UK GDPR, review text can still contain personal data, so filter it before storage. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
| Factor | Build in-house | Buy a managed feed |
|---|---|---|
| Source coverage | Each new site needs its own parser and maintenance | Multiple sources delivered in one schema |
| Syndication and dedup | Rules built and tuned by your team | Delivered with syndication and duplicate flags |
| Privacy controls | You design pseudonymisation and filters | Personal fields excluded at collection |
| Analysis | Full control of models and aspects | Raw feed, or feed plus sentiment and aspect tags |
| Best fit | One or two sources, strong data team | Several sources, several countries, weekly reporting |
Collecting publicly visible review text, ratings and dates is widely practised, but you must respect site terms, avoid logging in or bypassing controls, and minimise personal data. Check local law and each site's terms for your use case.
No. Reviewer names, profile links and photos are excluded. Where deduplication needs an identifier, a one-way pseudonymised hash is used instead.
Syndicated reviews are flagged using the attribution shown on the page and matched by text and date, so each review is counted once and every site it appears on is recorded.
Retailer and marketplace product reviews such as Amazon, Walmart and Boots can be combined with location reviews from Google and company reviews from Trustpilot, with a source field to keep them apart.
Weekly suits most brand-monitoring dashboards. Daily collection helps during launches, recalls or peak trading.
